The Hellenic Statistical Authority provides Internet users with all its publications to open or save them free of charge, as statistical data are considered to be public goods. These publications include data that represent the financial, social and other activities in Greece.

The task of Digitization, Documentation and Promotion of the NSSG’s Historical Archives was carried out in the context of the Action Line 2.2 Electronic government for civil service of the Operational Programme Information Society 2000-2006, 80% co-funded by the European Regional Development Fund and 20% by national sources. The aim was the development and preservation of the EL.STAT. printed material, as well as its promotion through the Internet. The Library is responsible for its management, availability to the public and preservation. During the project, 3.443 EL.STAT. books and magazines and 6 atlases, starting from the year 1859, were digitized. The database is continually enriched with the EL.STAT. new publications. After their digitization, the procedures that followed were the water marking and digital text production by implementing Optical Character Recognition (OCR) to the tables of contents. The digitized material was then accompanied by the appropriate metadata for easier management and finally the Internet environment was developed, in Greek and English language.

The user can
1) Select the category and subcategory of the subject of interest, then the data reference year and finally reach the requested publication.
2) Select the simple search, according to which one or more keywords are inserted and results are automatically extracted.
3) Select the advanced search, according to which the data for the requested publication is inserted using the information given by the system. The two main variables are the publications titles and keywords. Furthermore, the user is able to select the reference year or years, the publication language, as well as the frequency (monthly, annual etc.) and all these through a specific category.
4) Concerning maps, directly open the atlases that include the maps of interest by choosing the corresponding category.

The use of publications and statistical data included is allowed for personal and non-commercial purposes, provided that the source is distinctly mentioned. In case there are any adjustments or modifications by the user, this should be explicitly explained in his/her work.
